The company was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on March 7, 1988 under the name of Gujarat-Godrej Innovative Chemicals Limited. The business and undertaking of the erstwhile Godrej Soaps Limited was transferred to the Company under a Scheme of Amalgamation with effect from April 1, 1994 and the Company’s name was changed to Godrej Soaps Limited. Subsequently, under a Scheme of Arrangement the Consumer Products division of the Company was demerged with effect from April 1, 2001 into a separate company, Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL). The Company’s name was changed to Godrej Industries Limited on April 2, 2001. The Vegetable Oils and Processed Foods Manufacturing business of Godrej Foods Limited was transferred to the Company with effect from June 30, 2001. The Foods division (except Wadala factory) was then sold to Godrej Hershey Limited, on March 31, 2006. Swadeshi Detergents Limited, 100% subsidiary of the Company, was amalgamated with the Company effective from April 01, 2013. Wadala Commodities Limited was amalgamated with the Company effective from April 01, 2014. Vora Soaps Limited was amalgamated with the Company effective from December 14, 2017.

- 1897: Production began at Lalbaug in Mumbai, the first Godrej factory.
- 1918: Ardeshir Godrej launched the world’s first commercial vegetable oil soap.
- 1938: A provident fund for employees was introduced at Godrej, fourteen years before it became mandatory in India.
- 1943: Ardeshir's brother, Pirojsha, invested in Vikhroli, envisioning not merely an industrial site but a modern and forward-looking township. The 2,000 acres of mangroves placed in a philanthropic foundation continue to serve as the lungs of Mumbai.
- 1951: Godrej manufactured 1.7 million ballot boxes for India’s first general election. For a Group born from the spirit of swaraj, it was a proud moment to support a young democracy as it crafted its tomorrow.
- 1963: Founded in 1963, Godrej Chemicals is currently one of India’s leading manufacturers of oleochemicals, surfactants, specialty chemicals, and biotech products.
- 1988: Total Quality Management was formally introduced at Godrej. Quality moved from intent to institution.
- 1990: Godrej Propertjes was established, bringing the Group's philosophy of innovation and excellence to the real estate industry.
- 1991: Godrej Agrovet was incorporated with the purpose of crafting abundance through innovation that empowers farmers and nourishes the nation.
- 1994: Acquired Translektra, bringing the Goodknight and HIT brands into the Group. Over time, this has become one of the Group’s most significant value creation journeys.
- 1997: Celebrated its 100th birthday and remind itself that it is only as good as what it do next.
- 2001: The erstwhile Godrej Soaps was demerged into two businesses: Godrej Consumer Products and Godrej Industries, marking the Group’s first public listings.
- 2008: Godrej Consumer Products made the Group’s first African acquisitions, entering the fascinating world of hair extensions and hair care for women of African origin.
- 2010: Godrej Consumer Products broadened its international footprint and entered the Indonesian market by acquiring PT Megasari Makmur, a leading home and personal care player.
- 2011: The Godrej India Culture Lab ran as a successful 10-year experiment that created a new exploratory cultural space located within the Godrej headquarters in Vikhroli. It subsequently evolved into the Godrej Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lab.
- 2012: Passionate people make for passionate Godrejites. Godrej LOUD (Live Out Ur Dream), our distinctive take on recruitment, launches in India, kickstarting the search for young people with powerful personal dreams. This was subsequently hosted in Indonesia and Africa.
- 2013: Godrej Industries to merge Swadeshi Detergents with itself.
- 2013: Godrej Industries acquires 10 lakh shares of GCPL for Rs 87 crore.
- 2014: The Honorable High Court of Judicature at Bombay on September 05, 2014 sanctioned the Scheme of Amalgamation of Wadala Commodities with Godrej Industries and their respective shareholders.
- 2015: Godrej Properties and Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects create Godrej One, its new global headquarters at Vikhroli in Mumbai.
- 2016: Godrej Fund Management, now known as Godrej Ventures, was set up as the real estate private equity arm of the Group, specialising in managing institutional capital to develop residential and commercial properties across India.
- 2017: The Godrej Foundation is an independent philanthropic trust with around 15 percent shareholding in the Godrej Industries Group, dedicated to strengthening the foundations of a prosperous India. It was formed in 2017 as a part of restructuring from a previous trust.
- 2017: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Godrej Industries launched an unprecedented set of global corporate standards to support the business community in tackling discrimination against lesbian, gay, bi, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people, at the Godrej headquarters in Vikhroli, Mumbai.
- 2018: At the Black Box, its physical digital command centre, it monitors live digital activity across its brands, evaluate brand conversations, respond to issues, and gather consumer insights for new product development.
- 2019: The Light Box, an in-house photographic, audio and film production studio, is set up to create quick, high quality content for digital use.
- 2020: Godrej Capital, the financial services arm of the Group was established, with the purpose of crafting prosperity through fair, fast and flexible financing.
- 2020: In FY19-20, Godrej Properties Limited has achieved the highest ever sales in its history, making the Company India’s largest publicly listed developer by value of real estate sales.
- 2022: Godrej Living was founded as a specialised facilities management firm that provides sustainable, technology-driven residential community services in India.
- 2023: Godrej Consumer Products entered into an agreement to acquire the FMCG business of Raymond Consumer Care Limited, a leading player in the deodorants and sexual wellness categories in India, with the brands Park Avenue and Kamasutra. The acquisition complements its existing categories and has the potential to deliver double-digit, multi-decade growth.
- 2024: The Godrej Group announced an ownership realignment of the Godrej family shareholdings to maximise strategic direction, focus, agility, and create long-term value for stakeholders. The Group is owned, operated, and managed as two distinct business groups: the Godrej Industries Group and the Godrej Enterprises Group.
- 2025: The company was honoured to contribute to the historic moment when the Government of India announced the return of the relics of Gautam Buddha to India.
- 2026: As the Group enters a new phase of growth, it reaffirms its belief that business is a force for good.
