Petronet LNG (PLL) was formed on April 2, 1998 as Joint Venture Company (JVC) having shareholding of leading four Oil & Gas PSUs by Government of India order dated July 4, 1997. An Independent Board managed JVC created for development of facilities for the import, storage and regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas. The company is one of the leading companies in the Indian energy sector. The company was formed to import LNG and set up LNG terminals in the country, involving India's leading oil and natural gas industry players. The company’s promoters are GAIL (India) (GAIL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporaon (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporaon (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporaon (BPCL).
The company has set up its first LNG receiving and regasificaon terminal at Dahej, Gujarat, and another terminal at Kochi, Kerala. Petronet LNG is at the forefront of India's all-out national drive to ensure the country's energy security in the years to come with its major expansion plans which includes expansion of regasificaon capacity of Dahej terminal, new greenfield terminal on East Coast of India and a petrochemicals plant at Dahej amongst other projects.

Petronet LNG is engaged in import, storage and regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Its customers primarily consist of corporates such as Oil and Gas Entities, Gas Aggregators, Petrochemical Entities, Refineries, City Gas Distribution Entities, Fertilizer and Power Generating Entities and Other Industrial Entities.

2007: 24 spot LNG cargoes to revive Dabhol power plant/MOU with GMB for second jetty.
2009: Dahej expansion to 10 MMTPA/SPA with Exxon mobile for supplies from Australia.
2010: Gas sales agreements with GAIL, IOCL, BPCL for Kochi
2012: Regas agreement with GAIL for Dehaj expansion.
2013: Kochi terminal commissioned/ 1000th cargo in Dehaj terminal.
2013: Shipping agreement with Prachi/ Regas agreement with GSPC and BPCL for Dehaj expansion.
2014: EPC contract for Dehaj expansion/ Regas agreement with IOC for Dehaj expansion.
2016: Dehaj terminal expanded to 15 MTPA.
2017: Loaded 500th load at Qatar in a record time of 13 years.
2019: Dehaj expansion from 15 to 17.5 MTPA.
2020: Petronet LNG signs supplementary MoU with Tellurian.
2021: Petronet Energy (PEL) was incorporated for LNG Bunkering, GUCD of LNG ships, supply of heel to LNG vessels and other allied services.
2022: ‘Petronet LNG Singapore’ (PLSPL) was incorporated as a WoS.
2023: PLL's long-term chartered LNG vessels Aseem and Rahi achieved their 500th voyage and 700th voyage.
2023: Signing of Agreement for LNG Terminal at Gopalpur, Odisha.
2024: PLL signed the LNG SPA with Qatar Energy for purchase of 7.5 MMTPA for supply period from May 01, 2028 to December 31, 2048.
2024: The foundation stone for the Petrochemicals Project at Dahej was laid by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on March 12, 2024.
2024: The vessel ‘Disha’ achieved a significant milestone by completing 700th voyage between Qatar and India, in the month of June 2024.
2024: Dahej LNG Terminal received its 3600 Cargo, in the month of December 2024.
